What just happened?

Last week I shared with you a piece of music that points to the deep mystery of this Christian season of Christmas. I hope it stayed with you.

I suggested that, along with our secular culture, the church season shares the themes of celebration and connection with others, but that it also contains a third mysterious theme of awe and wonder. Our secular culture is incapable of pointing us towards the deep mystery of God made flesh in Jesus with any confidence, clarity or consistency.

At some point in this last week, I believe you got at least a glimpse of divine awe and wonder and I don't want you to lose it, so today, I invite you to try two things.

First, I invite you to take a couple of minutes right now and remember when that glimpse of mystery happened. Was it a moment of quiet in your home? Was it while listening to a piece of music or a prayer or a sermon? Was it while connecting with another person in a new and different way? Was it in a moment of worship- receiving bread and wine, kneeling at Silent Night or smelling the holy scent of incense?

It may have been something very small, but it is perhaps the most precious gift you received this Christmas. Now, what will you do with it? Will you remember it? Is it, perhaps, the beginning of something new, beautiful and life changing for you?

Maybe we can imagine that our glimpse of mystery is like a small divine seed planted in our hearts. If so, Jesus has a teaching for us. The second invitation is for you to follow this link and read these famous words. What will happen to the seed God planted in you? What kind of soil is your heart?

St. Paul's is a sacred space for your busy life where the hard rocks and choking weeds of secular life are kept at bay and the seed of God's word can grow and be fruitful. God has planted a seed in you. Don't let it die!

I hope to connect with you soon and perhaps one day hear your story.
