Daily Bread

This Sunday I'm going to be preaching on the Exodus story of manna in the wilderness. At the end of the sermon I am going to be mentioning a source of daily spiritual bread I discovered just in the last couple of weeks.

As you may know, my 'hero church' is the Church of the Savior in Washington DC. I don't have space here to say all that I love about them. The short answer is that they are wholly devoted to following Jesus and, through over sixty years of ongoing experiments in Christian Living, have found a wide range of ways to help us fallen, wounded, addicted, scared, and yet hopeful and intensely lovable human beings grow in faith. Our Discipleship Groups at St. Paul's are inspired by Church of the Savior.

One of their key insights is that there is no Outward Journey in service without an equally powerful Inward Journey of prayer. First, we must work on understanding and claiming our belovedness. Then, with others, we do the the work of discovering God's call on our lives. As a way of helping us in our Inward Journey and inspiring our Outward Journey, they are willing to send a very brief quote via email every day. This Sunday, I will conclude my sermon with one of those daily quotes.
